Yellow Submarine illustration style revival

March 27, 2023

The illustration style pioneered by Seymour Chwast and Milton Glaser at Push Pin studios in the ‘60s — utilized most famously in the Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine” (though not by Push Pin) — seems to be having a revival. This weekend we noticed its appearance in Apple ads for its new yellow iPhone, and again in the New York Times and The New Yorker. I think it’s most effective when used judiciously in small doses. So, not my favorite visual style, but undeniably eye-catching. And popular.
